All across the world, farmers markets are more popular than ever. An emphasis on local food means more people are trying to connect directly with thepeople that grow their produce and raise their meat, and farmers markets are the perfect vehicle for these relationships.
For travelers, farmers markets can be a great way to get a sense of the local culture. You may not be able to do much with the produce being sold unless your accommodations come with a kitchen, but farmers markets offer an opportunity to people watch, to learn more about what locals eat and to buy picnic fixings like cheese, cured meat, wine, fresh bread, pastries and fruit.
Occasionally, farmers markets will also host vendors selling prepared food that reflects the local culture. In France, you may find fresh macarons and other pastries. In Italy, you can stumble upon a wide variety of nuts and olives. In the Pacific Northwest, smoked salmon and hard cider are common finds.
Farmers markets may also incorporate arts and crafts vendors selling items like photographs, ceramics, paintings, jewelry and more. Buying souvenirs here ensures you’re supporting local artisans.
And finally, farmers markets are lively, busy places. You may find musicians and other street performers hard at work, adding to the ambience and color. Don’t just hurry through. Find a place to sit awhile and soak it all in.
