Central America is a hotbed of interesting festivals, and Nicaragua certainly holds its own. Look out for these festivals and events when you’re in the country.
If you are around at the end of November, you might be lucky enough to experience the uniquely Nicaraguan tradition of La Purisima and La Griteria. Families build altars to the Virgin Mary in their homes and invite neighbors and guests to visit them, and, on Dec. 8, they shout the praises of the Virgin as they tour the streets.
Horse lovers should head to Managua Aug.1–10 to see the Equestrians of Managua festival, when amazing horses parade through the city. Another horse festival takes place Jan. 5–9 in Granada, namely the Caballo Español Pura Sangre Fair.
Another great festival is the Rio San Juan Carnival, which boasts an aquatic float parade on the river near San Carlos. With around 17,000 participants each year, it’s a huge party Jan. 15–21.
Surfers will probably want to go to San Juan del Sur all year-round, but if you time your visit for the end of November you’ll be able to see the Latin American Surfing Competition at Playa Maderas, which attracts the top names from the region.
