There are many different study abroad programs and your school won’t necessarily promote all of them. However, it’s easy to find a good fit for your study abroad experience by doing a little research on your own and considering what your personal wants and needs are.
If you’re not sure you’re ready for an entire semester or year away from home, you can find short-term summer programs that are one month in length, packing as much learning, experience and sightseeing into four weeks as possible. CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) offers a multitude of these options in a variety of disciplines and destinations, from Journalism in Prague to Business in Berlin.
Maybe you feel like you have all your class credits taken care of, but you’d like to get an internship under your belt. IES Abroad offers summer internships in more than 25 cities that are part-time, unpaid positions, leaving you plenty of freedom to experience the destination. Some have language prerequisites, but others do not. You’ll be placed in an internship position that fits your interests and skills, working for IES partners such as non-profits, web and print publications, theaters and finance institutions.
To get the most out of your travel itinerary, though, you’ll want to look into the Institute For Global Studies’ Intern Around the World programs. You can spend three to nine months exploring three different countries spread across the globe. Options are varied and customizable. The Ecotourism and The Americas program takes students to Mexico, Costa Rica and Ecuador to work with dolphins, butterflies and rainforest conservation efforts. The European Art Program includes working for a theater in England, an art gallery in France and photographers in Spain. Other disciplines featured are marine biology, Asian religion and culture, Spanish and communications.
If you’ve studied abroad before and want to make an even bigger jump, you may decide to pursue the remainder of your degree at an overseas university. Organizations such as the Center for International Studies help English-speaking students make this transition alongside university partners for no added cost. CIS’s partner universities include Trinity College in Dublin, University of Newcastle in Australia and University of Westminster in the UK.
