Tips / Travel

Studies have shown we love our pets almost as much as we love our kids, so the thought of leaving them behind on a trip can sometimes be too much to handle. No problem, you can easily take them with you. Just be sure to follow a few simple guidelines before putting your pup on a plane.

Each airline has their own specific rules and restrictions for traveling with dogs, so be sure to look at their website and make a phone call before showing up at the terminal with Fido in tow. There are some things that are universal, though.

For starters, in the United States, it is mandatory your dog be fed and offered water within four hours before checking into a flight. While you can give them water right up until the moment they head for the cargo area, it might not be the best idea. Remember, dogs have smaller bladders than humans and are not capable of holding it as long as you.

Get your dog checked out by the vet before flying. They’ll let you know if the pup is up to the task, and whether it might be best to leave him or her with a friend this time. This isn’t actually optional — a health certificate is required for your dog to fly.

Wire carriers are generally not allowed, so look for crates with air holes in them. Not only will it keep them contained more effectively, but having solid walls around your dog will likely bring it more comfort during the flight. Also, avoid leaving any loose items that could harm your pet in the crate, but a small, soft toy might help keep him or her occupied during the flight.

Most importantly, exercise your dog before putting him or her on the plane. It’ll wear them out and calm them down for the flight, which should help combat any anxiety that might occur.

Finally, when that plane lands and the dog is able to get out of the crate, make sure to give him or her a lot of hugs and love so they know you didn’t forget them!
