Gambling has a storied tradition in Monte Carlo and thanks to lax laws and non-existent income taxes, it’s become a haven for tourists looking to bet money. If you’re heading to Monaco to let loose here are a few tips to stay safe.
Don’t Gamble with Locals
While Monte Carlo thrives on its gambling economy, it’s actually illegal for citizens to play. The government likes to protect them from blowing their money, so only visitors are allowed in the casinos. If you find a local willing to gamble, walk the other way.
Stay Near Casinos
Monte Carlo is not exactly known for its safety in general, with crime thriving in certain areas, so stay in a hotel near the main casinos to avoid any threats.
Don’t Count Cards
Counting cards is highly frowned upon in any gambling establishment and it’s especially dangerous if you do it in a country where you don’t have many rights as a non-citizen. Don’t be stupid and invite trouble if you don’t have to.
Don’t Get Drunk
Casinos love getting gamblers drunk, because the more you drink the less inhibited you’ll be. That means you’re likely to blow more money. Don’t lose all your cash because you can’t control yourself.
Bring Your Passport
As we said, it’s illegal to gamble in Monte Carlo if you’re a citizen. Bring your passport to prove you’re both a non-resident and you’re in the country legally, otherwise you could find yourself in jail.
