George V Dining Room at Ashford Castle feels like it belongs to a different time. Dazzling Waterford Crystal chandeliers, curtains and chairs with lush blue fabrics and framed drawings of local wildlife adorn the dining room. The grand décor in the restaurant matches the decadent dishes.
On the evening I dined at George V, all guests began with an amuse bouche courtesy of the chef. The crab, cucumber salad and avocado crème was slightly more than one bite, but it was tasty. To start, I had a selection of local artisan produce from the sea and land served tableside via a trolley. I chose to sample a variety of smoked meats and fish. All delicious, my favorite was the honey-mustard-smoked salmon with a perfect sweet and salty flavor. For my main course, I selected the slow-roasted leg of Achill Island lamb, served tableside from the carving trolley, with garlic and rosemary tomatoes and green beans. I enjoyed the dish and the tableside presentation. I love peanuts and peanut butter, so the peanut butter parfait was a no-brainer for dessert. It was accompanied with salted peanuts and banana ice cream.
The atmosphere, delicious local food and impressive wine selection made for a perfect dining experience. If you find yourself in County Mayo, a stop at George V Dining Room at Ashford Castle is a must.
