No, it’s not a scam. FlightCar is the latest iteration of the car-sharing economy, a Y Combinator start up from San Francisco where people can leave their car for free at an airport and get paid if someone rents it out, kind of like Airbnb meets Uber.
The concept is a little jarring at first, as people would generally feel uncomfortable loaning their car to a stranger. To give customers peace of mind, the company insures your vehicle for up to $1 million in liability, in addition to cleaning out your car before and after your trip. Any theft or damage is covered by the company, which also does renter screening to make sure your car is in the hands of someone with a good driving record.
It’s entirely possible no one will rent your car, giving you free parking at the airport. If someone does rent it, depending on the class of vehicle, people get paid five to 20 cents per mile for the first 75 miles and 40 cents a mile after that, giving owners around $30–40 dollars a trip.
FlightCar is currently available in 12 cities, including Austin, Los Angeles and Newark, with more on the way.
