Destination

The city of Tikal was one of the most important Mayan cities of its time, and the site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. These days, the ancient city is a must-see for many tourists visiting Guatemala, but how should you ensure you enjoy your time at the site to the fullest?

Tikal is situated in the sweltering jungle region of Peten, and the environment presents its own set of challenges. An early rise is essential in order to avoid the heat of the day, and many visitors recommend the sunrise tour, which can be booked via many tour operators in the nearby town of Flores.

Leaving early gives the best chance of seeing monkeys and other wildlife; however it is important to check weather conditions because cloud or mist can block the sunrise. Whichever tour you decide to join, it is worth staying with your guide, who will be fully certified and full of information about the site.

Reading up on the history of the Maya will make the stories your guide tells all the more vivid, enabling you to visualize the civilization that has now been lost to the jungle. Make sure to take a lot of water and some snacks, as well as sunblock and a hat to protect from the intense sun of Peten.

Take the time to look into the tree canopy in the hope of seeing spider and howler monkeys. Those who choose to arrive for sunrise have a slim chance of seeing an elusive jaguar, which have been spotted in the park before.

Most importantly, enjoy the trip and appreciate the marvels of the Mayan civilization!
