If you’ve seen Mumbai and Delhi, Kolkata should be next on your list, known for its history and contributions to the arts. It is also one of the most congested cities in India, so follow these tips to get around efficiently.
Old World vs. New World
Many of Kolkata’s street signs were changed after gaining independence from the British Raj, but locals and taxi drivers will frequently refer to the English version. Do a little research on your destination to avoid confusion.
Manual vs. Automatic
Auto rickshaws are the quintessential mode of transportation for Indian cities. They’re cheap and can weave through traffic, but in Kolkata they operate on a fixed route, with the fares costing 6–10 INR depending on the distance. Tana rickshaws (pulled by hand) are also available, though you should expect a much higher rate for foreigners.
Ambassador vs. Uber
Kolkata wouldn’t look right without the sea of yellow Ambassador Classics, the vintage-style sedans used by taxi drivers for decades. They are cheap and can be found nearly everywhere, though many do not use the meter for tourists so be prepared to haggle. The blue-and-white taxis are newer and offer air conditioning for an extra 25 percent charge, but most visitors will probably want to use Uber, which has exploded in popularity since 2015. The fares are a little pricier but you can’t beat the service.
