New York City is on everyone’s list but you don’t need to stay in expensive Manhattan to get the most out of it. Follow these tips to cross the river in a breeze.
Driving
The bridges and tunnels will cost money and driving in New York City is never fun so don’t make driving your first choice. The George Washington Bridge connects Fort Lee to upper Manhattan; the Lincoln Tunnel connects Weehawken to Midtown; and the Holland Tunnel connects Jersey City to lower Manhattan.
Cab
This will be even more expensive and probably a last resort. Whether it’s a taxi or an Uber, be prepared to pay at least $50 depending on your location and time of day.
Rail
PATH is by far the easiest way to get across the Hudson, with stops in Newark, Hoboken, Jersey City and six in Manhattan, five of which have transfers to Brooklyn. Take the Yellow/Blue line for getting back to Jersey late at night. There are also five NJ Transit lines that take you directly to Penn Station, in addition to bus lines that pickup and drop off at the Port Authority.
Ferry
Taking a boat across the river is a relatively cheap and quick way to get to New York City. NJ Waterway operates a commuter route from Weehawken to West 39th Street all day for every day of the week. The trip is pleasant in the summer and comfortable in the winter thanks to climate-controlled cabins.
