Tastemaker Gilles Peterson presented his Worldwide Awards at KOKO in London Jan. 16.
Peterson is a stalwart of BBC’s Radio 6, where he shows off his almost unbelievable knowledge of music from around the globe. At KOKO, he introduced some of the acts that grabbed his attention over the past year, including Little Simz, Henry Wu presents Yussef Kamaal and Josey Rebelle.
First and second release tickets sold out quickly for the event. At £35, it was not a cheap night out, but attendees got to see some top talent as well as other up-and-coming artists selected by Peterson. Alongside the rising stars were renowned jazz influencers Kamasi Washington, Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchesta, Leron Thomas and Deft.
Winter in London is not the most attractive time of year to visit, but if you do find yourself in the British capital at this time of year, it is cultural events such as the Worldwide Festival that cheer up a usually grey and rainy time of year.
Peterson is also responsible for organizing the Worldwide Festival in Sete, France, from July 4–10.
