One of the greatest joys of being a runner is the opportunity to take in new sights and sounds while putting your feet to the ground. It’s even better if you’re able to work your running regime into your travels.
The Great Ethiopian Run is an annual 10-kilometer race that takes place every November in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was started in 2000 by Olympic runner Haile Gebrselassie and has grown to include more than 40,000 runners from around the world including the sport’s top athletes. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a great competitor to participate, just someone with a love for running and exploration.
It traverses many of the city’s most prominent attractions and is a great excuse to visit this culturally rich and magnificent country. The race is held in the latter half of November with registration generally open until the week beforehand. The last race attracted more than 600 runners from around the world, with the majority coming from countries around Africa. It’s quite the spectacle and a great way to meet people from such a diverse continent.
Addis Ababa is the third-highest capital in the world, at 2,500 meters above sea level, so you might want to practice your breathing before signing up. For more information, check out the Great Ethiopian Run website.
