Food & Drink

To celebrate Black History Month, we wanted to put Grown Folks, the first female-owned and Black-owned brand for soul food-inspired hard seltzer and premium craft beverages, on your radar.

Owner and founder Danica Dias grew up in a big Louisiana Creole family. In her family, the ability to gather together and indulge was the epitome of being “grown,” so adults were always referred to as “grown folks.” The “grown folks” in Danica’s family passed along Black cultural traditions surrounding food and drink.

Dias got the idea to craft alcoholic beverages in 2020 during COVID-19. While cooking her late grandma’s handwritten peach cobbler recipe, she thought she could create beverages using her family’s traditional soul food flavors. The story exemplifies how Black entrepreneurs lead the way in creating culturally empowering businesses that make a difference in lives while celebrating Black culture and soul food flavors. Each flavor is inspired by beloved soul food dishes passed down for countless generations. Grown Folks has three different hard seltzer flavors, as well as a premium craft beer called Front Porch.

Hard seltzer flavors come in Peach Cobbler, Ambrosia and Key Lime. Each seltzer is crafted at 6 percent ABV with real fruit juice and fermented sugar, and is brewed and canned to perfection.

Front Porch is an American Light Lager. Crafted at 4.5 percent ABV, the pale drink with subtle floral aromas is sure to bring you back to those warm summer days on the front porch.

Grown Folks is available in select retailers in California and will soon launch in select Whole Foods, Sam’s Club and Total Wine stores this spring.
