Travelers looking for a unique experience — without having to necessarily strike out on their own — should consider a guided mountain climbing trip. With a moderate amount of effort, preparation and training, you can notch an accomplishment while gaining a perspective on a location few other travelers receive. And you’ll be in better shape at the end of your journey.
Companies around the world offer guided trips to the summits of iconic mountains like Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount McKinley, Mount Rainier, Mount Elbrus and Aconcagua. Not all of these trips are suitable for beginners (you’ll need some experience to sign up for a summit bid of Mount McKinley in Alaska, for example), but several are aimed at travelers with zero technical climbing expertise.
The only caveat is you get in shape and bring an enthusiastic outlook. In return, you’ll be rewarded with the experience of a lifetime and the opportunity to see a location as few others do. Trips appropriate for beginners include summit attempts of Mount Rainier in Washington and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
If you’re willing to plunk down the fees required to join a guided trip, there are several reputable companies offering such services: RMI Expeditions, Mountain Madness, Alpine Ascents, and International Mountain Guides.
