For western tourists, shopping in Morocco can be intimidating if they’re not familiar with the custom of haggling. It is part of the culture for almost all the souks in Marrakech, so be sure to follow these tips and not get ripped off.
Shop Around
If you see something you like, there’s most likely another shop selling it too, probably close by. The first step to purchasing something in the souks is to get an idea of what the average price might be. Shopkeepers keep an eye out for tourists, hoping to get a little extra cash out of them so learn what the starting price is.
They Go High, You Go Low
Be aware haggling is part of the salesmanship game in Morocco. Give an incredulous look, but don’t be too surprised when a souk quotes you a price exorbitantly high. Give them a counteroffer of 25–50 percent the original, but don’t let the excuses fool you. Common replies are you’re getting the wholesale price or they’re selling at a loss, but again, it’s all part of the game. Keep the back and forth going until you can settle on a price.
Keep It Fun
Don’t get so caught up in the haggling you can’t agree on a price. A bad attitude or overeagerness to buy will not get you a lower price, but some friendly banter will make them more amenable to compromise. Be firm but understand there’s no such thing as a fair price. Knowing some French or Arabic can help; the souks will no doubt charge you more if they know you’re from the west.
