Whether you like a family friendly day at the zoo or prefer Hollywood-style debauchery, here are five fun Halloween destinations to check out.
World’s Largest Halloween Party:
Louisville Zoo, Ky.
Every October, this zoo transforms into a series of elaborate exhibits, ranging from the Land of Oz to Shrek’s Swamp to Pumpkinville, USA, which is a hillside glowing from 160 custom carved pumpkins.
West Hollywood, Calif.
The sheer eccentricity of this event can give the Village Halloween Parade a run for its money. Not recommended for kids, there are risqué, drag-themed costumes as far as the eye can see, as well as multiple stages with entertainment. The official times are from 6–11 p.m., but people are partying here from noon to 3 a.m.
Salem, Mass.
For the entire month of October, Salem has a number of events and attractions that draw more than 200,000 visitors a year. The town is home to the infamous Witch Trials of 1692, making it the perfect Halloween destination. Events include a carnival, a haunted corn maze, theater presentations and a costume party.
New York City, N.Y.
The annual street pageant draws up to 2 million spectators every year to the mile-long stretch through Greenwich Village. Puppeteer and mask maker Ralph Lee created the parade back in 1974. It is the only nighttime parade in the city, where you can see pop culture costumes, giant puppets and elaborate Halloween creations.
Key Wet, Fla.
The annual street party has grown to rival Mardi Gras in New Orleans, bringing in more than 100,000, which is nearly three times the population of the island. The last week of October showcases a variety of entertainment and parties, culminating in an elaborate parade through town.

This year, the Northern Lights put on quite the display across Ireland, but don’t think these lights are the only thing you can see in Ireland. In fact, many spots across the country provide some of the best opportunities to stargaze thanks to low levels of light pollution. Ireland has three International Dark Sky Parks and even more spots which, although not accredited, are worth a visit for anyone wishing to see the sky in its unfiltered form.
