There’s no place that can keep the supernatural enthusiast in you happy like the city of Dublin.
There are several companies that will give you a tour of haunted Dublin for a price, and if you’re not up for walking — and like the theatrical — a bus tour is a great option. Gravedigger Bus Tour takes you through plague-ridden Dublin and professional actors bring more than a little theatricality to your evening (€25). The Gravedigger makes stops at St. Audeons, Kilmainham Gaol, Bullys Acre and finishes off at John Kavanagh’s, a.k.a, The Gravediggers Pub, for a free pint. Still not convinced? Watch their promotional video to get an idea of the experience for yourself.
Rather do some walking? Not a problem. Hidden Dublin Walks offer three different haunted walking tours of the city, with prices from €13. Walk through the ancient Viking enclave of Oxmantown on the Northside Ghost Walk, wander the area around St. Audeon’s Church to the Gates of Hell or take a bus out to the Dublin Mountains to tour the infamous Hellfire Club.
Don’t even want to have to walk? Well, sure you can sit down and have a pint just as well! John Kavanagh’s is famous for being the historical haunt of body snatchers in addition to a ghostly presence who makes an appearance at the bar from time to time. You also certainly can’t go wrong with the Brazen Head, Ireland’s oldest pub, which is supposedly haunted by Robert Emmet, an Irish rebel leader who was executed in 1803.
Oh, and don’t forget Ireland’s most famous supernatural son: Dracula. The Bram Stoker Festival descends on Dublin every October and is not a spectacle to be missed. If you come to the Emerald Isle too early or too late for the festival, however, not to fear. You can learn all about Bram Stoker on Dublin’s Ghost Bus tour (€28), which covers the famous Dubliner’s origins as well as a variety of other spooky Dublin attractions.
