The Serengeti’s Great Migration is one of the most awe-inspiring sites to see in Africa, if not the world. Approximately 260,000 zebras, 270,000 gazelles, 1.7 million wildebeest and thousands of other species migrate from Tanzania to southern Kenya from January to March.
Thousands of travelers come to see the natural spectacle, and now they and anyone else in the world can get get real-time information on the migration. The safari operators of Discover Africa developed HerdTracker to help explorers plan their trip to the Serengeti, using information sourced from pilots, safari guides, park rangers and lodges.
HerdTracker is a web app, viewable through an Internet browser. The display is a Google Map, augmented to show herd location and migratory predictions. People looking to take a safari during the migration can plan their itinerary on the weather, migratory movements, predator interactions and river crossings. One of the most popular stops is the crossing of the Grumeti River, where crocodiles wait to hunt.
To track the migration and learn more about visiting the Serengeti, visit Discover Africa’s website.
