The James Beard Foundation’s brand-new New York City food hall, Market 57, located within Pier 57, just opened last month and it’s worth a visit during your next trip to the Big Apple. Not only is Market 57 a fantastic spot to discover new flavors and up-and-comers in the world of food, but it also boasts a broader purpose of helping underrepresented individuals in the culinary world find their footing.
The food hall houses more than a dozen kiosks touting an array of vendors, with a special focus on minority- and women-owned businesses. Visitors will find a range of food items and cuisines available, from Indian homestyle cooking to specialty coffees, craft beers to bubble tea, South Asian-inspired ice cream to Caribbean seafood. There’s also a Foundation-launched Good to Go kiosk that acts as an incubator for new fast-causal concepts in a risk-mitigated environment. For restauranteurs and concepts granted a space at the kiosk, they’ll also receive a per-month stipend to help support their concept’s growth.
For visitors who want even more, there’s also a showcase and educational kitchen, Platform by JBF, where chefs in residence and other talent can provide cooking demos and similar events. Events occur nearly daily, and range from tasting tours of the market itself to moderated conversations with culinary changemakers. Tickets can be purchased online.
