Set on Market Street (formerly known as High Street during colonial times) in Philadelphia, High Street on Market was recently named the No. 2 Best New Restaurant in America by Bon Appétit magazine. Located in an intimate setting in Old City, decked out in local artisan work and featuring a completely open kitchen, the restaurant prides itself on its freshly baked bread, as well as a unique menu reflecting the seasonal availability of ingredients.
I tried the restaurant’s sampling option, including a tasting of eight dishes selected by the kitchen and shared by the table. Items were chosen from the extensive menu of shared dishes, as well as unique pasta and plated entrees, like octopus with saffron, black olive and sun gold tomatoes and smoked pumpkin tortelloni with burnt sage, walnuts and rye cracker.
Each dish brought to sample was well-prepared, delicious and unique, with standouts including creamy potted shrimps with whipped foie, nutmeg and toast; freshly baked bread with delicious house-made spreads; and caraway rye rigatoni with pastrami ragu and Gulden’s mustard. Though not options I’d normally select, not one disappointed and i left feeling full and surprised with how much I enjoyed each innovative dish.
Paired with excellent service and lively ambiance, the dining experience was outstanding and made for a wonderful night.
