The world’s first and only ski-in distillery and gastro-saloon, High West is renowned for its regional and seasonal menu as well as small batch, mountain-crafted spirits. The rustic restaurant is located at the bottom of Quittin’ Time ski run and next to the Town Lift just one block off Park City’s historic Main Street, making it a convenient spot for both skiers and visitors.
After a long day of skiing in unusually cold temperatures, I visited High West ready to warm up with a cocktail. The menu of spirits and drinks is extensive, featuring spirits made from local, mountain ingredients distilled in a traditional copper pot, and cocktails handcrafted with fresh juices and premium mixers to complement High West’s delicious whiskeys and vodkas. A group member recommended the Dead Man’s Boots cocktail after I announced I’m not exactly a fan of spirits, and I did not regret my decision. The drink, featuring Rendezvous Rye and El Jimador Reposado Tequila mixed with lime juice and Fever Tree ginger beer, was refreshing and tasty without being too boozy.
While my cocktail was delicious, the western mountain cuisine stole the show. We started with the fried pig chips, dusted with sweet barbecue seasoning and served with Granny Smith apple sauce; house pretzels with whiskey-whipped beer cheese; and, my favorite, crispy, tempura-fried shishito peppers with spicy mayo.
The majority of the group opted for the highly recommended pot pie for our entrees, as it promised seasonal ingredients sure to warm us up. Tender chicken, wild mushrooms, roasted tomatoes and root vegetables were served in a pot topped with a crispy pastry top I dipped in the pot to soak up the delicious flavors.
Our meal concluded with The S’more, featuring a house-made vanilla marshmallow, molasses graham cracker and local dark chocolate, and The Grillswith, including a grilled Krispy Kreme donut dusted with cinnamon and topped with vanilla ice cream and whiskey caramel sauce. We left warm, full and ready to brace the cold on another skiing adventure in snowy paradise the next day.
