Boulder, Colo.’s, famous Flatiron Mountains are formed by sharp slabs of red rock that jut precipitously from the surrounding hills. Not only are they incredibly scenic, but they’re also a playground for hikers, artists and rock climbers.
The best way to start your day in the Flatirons is to head to Boulder’s Chautauqua Park, where there are ample trailheads and well-signed routes. Be sure to get there early if you go on a weekend, as the parking areas fill up quickly.
Visiting Boulder has several suggestions for Flatirons trails from Chautauqua, along with a handy map for further reference. However, maps aren’t necessarily needed, as the trails are well signed the entire way.
Artists may enjoy taking photographs or painting the Flatirons and surrounding meadows, which burst with colorful poppies, columbines and other wildflowers in early spring. And if you’re into rock climbing, there are several areas to explore. Flatirons North, Central and South are the major climbing sections, and there are routes for sport and tread climbing. Mountain Project details the various routes and areas.
Bikes and horses are allowed on the trails too. For more information, visit the City of Boulder’s website detailing this type of use in the Flatirons.
