Destination

Chances are you’ve seen photos of Oregon’s Oneonta Gorge. The narrow slot canyon, choked with bright green ferns, shafts of sunlight filtering down to the creek below, is heavily photographed. It’s also heavily visited, but there are some things to know before you undertake this unique hike on your own.

The gorge “hike” is actually more of a watery traverse. You first scale a massive logjam at the gorge’s opening, and it’s often wet and slick. It can be dangerous, so use caution and go slowly.

Then, you’re actually wading through the creek for the majority of your 0.6-mile round-trip hike. The water can be cold and during rainy times may reach as high as your chest. Be prepared with waterproof gear, good footwear and a change of clothes. It’s also wise to go on a warm day, which will lessen the sting of the water.

You’ll be rewarded with stunning views from the gorge floor, with the highlight being 100-foot-tall Oneonta Falls.

Another tip: Travel here early in the morning (arriving at the parking lot before 9 a.m.) or go during a weekday. Lots of people travel through the area and traffic can be challenging at peak times.
