Founded in the late 16th century, the city of Udaipur in the western Indian state of Rajasthan sits on the shores of two scenic lakes, Lake Pichola and Fateh. The city is known as the “Venice of the East,” with a picturesque setting surrounded by the lakes and lush green hills of the Aravalli Mountains.
Tour companies like Princess Trails offers visitors the chance to get to know rural India with its unique horse safaris, taking riders through Udaipur’s little villages and scenic landscape on Marwari horses, the former mounts of the Maharajas and princes of India.
Horseback safaris with Princess Trails take participants through the rocky hills of the Aravalli Mountains, over the area’s fertile plains and the wild savannahs of Western Malwa. Guests stay overnight in tented safari camps in the Indian bush, sometimes located next to a little village and sometimes in the remoteness of the Indian landscape.
A normal safari day includes between five and six hours in the saddle, as well as a lunch break and several smaller breaks for sightseeing and tea. Highlights include rides past the ancient Hindu temples of Nagda and Eklingji and tours of the scenic Haldi Ghati Valley. Rates start from about $127 per rider per day.
Hidden Trails, a tour company specializing in horseback riding tours across India, offers riding safaris in Udaipur throughout 2016. Starting from $1,395, the eight-day, seven-night itinerary includes overnight accommodations in a hotel or cottage, daily riding and lessons, sightseeing with an English-speaking tour guide, a full-day excursion to Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur and a half-day excursion to Eklingji and Nagda.
