Though it’s highly recommended to adopt a pet in America, as there’s no shortage of them needing a good home, sometimes you fall in love with a dog or cat while traveling and want to find a way to bring him home.
Here are some things to keep in mind.
Vaccinations
There is an extensive list of vaccinations and treatments required for animals entering and leaving the country, and it’s your responsibility to make sure all of them are acquired and that you have verifiable proof in the form of certificates. Your new pet will be denied at the border if you’re lacking even one required vaccination, no exceptions. You can usually find the requirements on the Department of Agriculture’s website.
Cost
It can cost anywhere between $100 and $3,000 to transport a pet overseas, depending on size, distance, country of origin and how soon you plan to travel. Have the money set aside and be prepared for any “surprise” fees that might come up along the way. Different airlines set different prices.
Can It Fly?
Is the animal even able to fly? Some dogs and cats, due to medical conditions or problems with anxiety or stress can’t handle the rigors of being transported in a flight’s cargo hold and it’s unlikely you’ll be allowed to keep it with you in the cabin. Don’t put your desires over the animal’s welfare.
Will the Airline Take It?
While many airlines allow the transportation of pets, some flat out refuse it. Some will only transport animals within the United States, while others decide on a case-by-case basis. Call ahead and speak with the airline before arriving at the airport with your new pet.

Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska spans more than 6 million acres; however, most visitors only see a fraction of the park. This is partially due to the park’s many remote areas, but also, more recently, because of a landslide that rendered one of the park’s main thoroughfares completely inaccessible, indefinitely.
