Tips / Travel

Whether traveling with your significant other, who you see every day, or with your old college roommate you have not seen in a few years, traveling with a companion can bring unique stressors to even the most solid relationship. Here are a few key tips to make sure you and your travel buddy are still friends on the other end of the trip.

  • Know what type of travelers you each are. Is he a laidback, chill by the poolside kind of guy? If so, you will need to respect this when trying to plan an eight-mile hike followed by wine tasting. Be sure to respect your travel partner’s time, and they will no doubt return the favor.
  • Give them space. If you are traveling for a week or more, it might be nice to take a moment or two off from one another, to ensure you are both in positive spirits. This is particularly true if the above applies to you, and you are different styles of travelers.
  • Be extra kind to one another. Dealing with the stress of TSA delays and trying to catch close connections can be difficult enough. Be sure not to take this frustration out on your travel buddy. Now is not the time to re-hash old problems in your relationship with this individual. Just show a little kindness and your trip will be smooth sailing.
  • Avoid spending all of your time on social media. When traveling with a friend, it is good to be present in the moment, and this is difficult to do when constantly updating your Snapchat story. Photos are the best souvenirs you can get, but save the minute-by-minute updates for another time. Appreciate your travel buddy and give them your full attention.
