Safety

India’s sites and culture are vibrant and colorful, as are its culinary traditions. Unfortunately if you’re not careful, you might get you a bad case of the infamous “Delhi Belly.” Here are some tips to help keep your appetite.

Bottled Water

India does not have safe drinking water, so if you have a kitchen, boil it first or opt for bottled water when you’re out. Some foods like panipuri have recipes with watery chutneys that might be made with tap water, so try to be aware of what you’re ordering.

See What’s Cooking

India has some of the best street food in the world, but these places can be the No. 1 culprit for “Delhi Belly.” Avoid any raw produce that might have been washed with tap water, which will be most street vendors and even 5-star restaurants. Instead opt for foods that have been thoroughly cooked at restaurants with a high turnover.

Protect Yourself

Before you embark on your journey, consider eating a probiotic yogurt to help boost the good bacteria lining your stomach wall. This will increase your digestive health and boost your immunity. Charcoal tablets are also a common remedy for stopping an upset stomach and preventing dysentery.
