One of the simplest, yet overlooked aspects of backpacking is actually packing the backpack. Once you’ve thought of everything else, including all the items you might need in the wilderness, it’s important to also consider how you’re packing them — both for ease of access and so your pack is evenly and efficiently weighted. Skip this important step and you’ll be annoyed at the least, and injured at the worst.
There are plentyof tutorials online that can demonstrate how to properly load a backpack, though you can get the gist with just a few basic principles.
Consider the heaviest items and the items you aren’t likely to need access to. Pack heavy items toward the back of the pack — the part that will rest against your back. This ensures the pack is not pulling you backwards as you walk. Items you won’t need can also go toward the middle of the pack, away from outer pockets and zippers.
Keep rain gear, snacks, first aid and navigational tools near the access points, such as in the brain of the pack. You may also want to pack a warm layer in an easily accessible spot.
Your tent, cook gear and sleeping bag can be stowed away, as you won’t need them while hiking. Finally, make sure your pack is evenly weighted on the left and the right sides to ensure comfort and ease of walking.
