It can be tough to travel at a time you usually spend with family and friends. Here are a few tips to survive the upcoming holidays when you’re away from home.
Experiencing something new and exciting can be a great distraction to keep you from getting homesick. Plan a side-trip and go somewhere you have always wanted to travel to, or explore a new part of the city you’re staying in. Now, when you check in with your family members, you’ll have something new to share.
It might be difficult, but you may find relief in unplugging a little. Try scrolling through your Facebook feed a little less during the holidays to avoid a near constant reminder you are not at home, although your friends and family are. However, you should make an effort to call or Skype your family and friends during the holidays. If you don’t have a phone with international access or a personal computer while traveling, check if your hotel or hostel has any computers available for you to use.
Finally, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! Get in the spirit of things and check to see if there are any local Christmas markets or seasonal festivals in the area where you are planning to travel. If you’re studying abroad or are on an extended trip, you can even ask your new friends or neighbors to participate in a “friendsgiving” potluck. It’s a great way to have both a little taste of home, as well as everyone else’s. If you’re staying with a host family, ask if you can join in any of their holiday traditions and be sure to share your own.
It’s the most wonderful time of year for a reason!
