Reviews / Hotel

My friends and I have always been fans of quirky retreats, so when we were tipped off about the chance to sleep in a human-sized bird’s nest on a recent trip to Big Sur, there was no doubt we were jumping at the opportunity. Treebones Resort is considered a premier glamping resort and the exclusive home to the Human Nests. These man-made, giant bird’s nests are designed for folks who want to sleep like they have wings out in the wild.

It’s a walk-in campsite with little more than a picnic table, water access and restrooms a short stroll away. The real gem is the nest itself. It’s pretty much exactly as it sounds, an oversized bird’s nest constructed with wood and made to look like something winged creatures might sleep in.

It’s certainly a unique way to spend a night, if not a little nonsensical. The nest isn’t enclosed, with wide gaps in between most of the “twigs,” so if it rains in the middle of the night you’re going to get wet. That’s why they recommend you bring a tent along just in case. Inside you’ll find a futon pad to sleep on, but we ended up placing our sleeping bags on top for added comfort.

The campsite is in a fantastic location not too far from some of Big Sur’s best sights, but the $175 is pretty excessive just to sleep on a futon pad without any protection from the bugs.
