If you’re visiting any hurricane-prone destinations from June 1–Nov. 30, such as the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coast, it is important to be prepared for unexpected weather occurrences. Here are a few guidelines for your summer or fall travels:
- Purchase travel insurance that covers natural disasters. Insurance companies typically require travelers to purchase a plan before a storm is named, another reason to buy insurance as soon as possible.
- Check in with your hotel. Find out your hotel’s refund policy, or “hurricane guarantee,” in case of storms or natural disasters. If your hotel has a guarantee, ask for it in writing. Also ask if they have an evacuation plan in place, and print out maps of the evacuation zone.
- If you’re taking a cruise, purchase airfare with the cruise line. That way, in the event of a hurricane or other emergency, your cruise line will take care of you if there are any delays or cancellations to the original cruising schedule.
- Pack sufficient medications, two weeks worth, if possible.
- If you’re bringing Fido, have a copy of his vaccination and health records, food and a pet carrier, if possible.
- Stay informed. While you’re on your trip, listen to weather reports on the TV or radio, and read newspapers, so you can track any changes to the weather.
- If you’re renting a car, make sure you always have a full tank of gas.
- Keep plenty of cash on hand.
- Sign-up for flight status alerts. Check in frequently to ensure flights are on schedule.
