Adventure

So you’re looking for something to do outside now that winter has set in? You’re tired of building snowmen and shoveling the driveway? Here’s a great way to take advantage of winter’s frozen lakes, get outside and try something new and unique: ice fishing.

Sure, ice fishing has been around forever, but recently it has seen an uptick in popularity. Adventurers of all kinds are finding the sport an exciting way to stimulate their senses and participate in nature. And then there’s the challenge.

The best way to get started is to find someone else who is fishing. This means two things: that the ice is thick enough to walk on and that there is an auger nearby to drill a hole. Ice fishermen are a friendly community and someone will be happy to help.

A regular fishing pole will be too long to use, but a hand line will do just fine. Short ice fishing poles are also available. Hook a minnow onto the end of your line, drop it down into the water and you’re in business.

Don’t forget to bundle up before you head out. There is no shelter out there, unless you bring your own. A thermos of hot chocolate and a small grill will also go a long way toward making the most of the afternoon. Be sure to check your state’s license regulations and always, always, always triple check the ice before you step on it.

Ice fishing is about patience and appreciating nature. You may choose to enjoy the quiet solitude and contemplation of a lake where you are the only person fishing or you may opt for the convivial atmosphere of other fishermen and women. Whatever your preference, ice fishing offers a unique way to connect with the outdoors.
