Italy continues to be a popular destination for travelers, particularly in the summer; however, many of its cities are experiencing overtourism, leading to less-than-ideal conditions for travelers seeking an authentic Italian vacation. This doesn’t mean you can’t go to Italy in summer without the crowds. Sure, you might not be guaranteed a visit to Rome or Venice without many other tourists trying to do the same, but there are five other Italian cities and destinations promising an equally enriching experience without the crowds.
Instead of Rome, Try Verona
Known as “small Rome” due to its Roman heritage, this UNESCO World Heritage site features a wide variety of Roman relics, including a Roman amphitheater still in use for concerts and operas, and a well-preserved arena. Verona’s medieval buildings, vibrant piazzas, Renaissance palaces and plenty of green spaces await.
Instead of the Amalfi Coast, Visit the Cilento Coast
Avoid the traffic jams and high prices of the Amalfi Coast and opt for the Cilento Coast. A national park, this region offers sandy beaches, unspoiled terrain and charming seaside towns. Explore ancient Greek ruins in Paestum, relax in fishing villages like Santa Maria di Castellabate and San Marco di Castellabate, and enjoy excellent seafood and local delicacies.
Instead of Venice, Go to Comacchio
Experience the same charms of Venice without the throngs of tourists at Comacchio, located just 2.5 hours south of Venice. Built on 13 islands in a lagoon, Comacchio boasts unique footbridges, picturesque canals, historic sites, fresh seafood, boat tours and more.
Instead of Cinque Terre, Opt for the Gargano Peninsula
Located in Puglia, this peninsula is the perfect alternative to Cinque Terre thanks to its dramatic coastline, white-washed towns and lush national park. Gargano Peninsula’s five main towns, including Peschici and Vieste, feature medieval architecture, beautiful beaches, and a variety of outdoor activities like hiking and boat tours. Don’t miss out on its rich culinary traditions, either.
Instead of Florence, Travel to Parma
Find a quieter alternative for art and historical experiences at Parma. Like Florence, Parma offers refined architecture and Renaissance splendor with fewer tourists than Florence. Impressive landmarks include Parma Cathedral; Teatro Farnese; and National Gallery, which includes works by Da Vinco and Correggio. Parma also boasts a vibrant opera scene and famous food offerings like Parmigiano Reggiano and prosciutto.
These cities were highlighted by International Living.
