My friend and I recently dined at Kawaii Tori Sushi in Yardley, Pennsylvania. The sushi restaurant previously operated out of a local coffee shop and recently moved into its own brick-and-mortar location. It was the first visit at the new location for both of us.
Kawaii Tori Sushi doesn’t take reservations for groups smaller than six. We met on a Tuesday, shortly after the restaurant opened for dinner service, and didn’t have to wait for a table. The restaurant got more crowded as the night went on and we were happy we opted for an early dinner.
Our waiter came over with waters and to take our order shortly after we were seated. We each ordered a glass of Chardonnay while we perused the dinner menu. After taking breaks to chat, we finally decided to share several dishes from the sushi and appetizer menu. To start, we ordered the spicy tuna fried rice, which came recommended. We also ordered a salmon avocado roll and dragon roll. We asked to keep one menu in case we wanted to order more. Our waiter seemed new, but he was polite and attentive during our meal.
The spicy tuna fried rice and two rolls arrived all at once. The appetizer did not disappoint! It featured crispy rice shaped to look like tater tots, topped with spicy tuna, avocado, scallions and a sweet soy sauce. The simple salmon avocado roll was perfectly prepared. The dragon roll included eel, cucumber and was topped with avocado, fish roe and a sweet soy sauce. We both enjoyed each roll and decided to order a couple more dishes.
We decided on the ceviche from the appetizer section and the kamikazi roll from the sushi section. The roll arrived first. It was filled with kani, fish roe, tempura crunch, cucumber and house kawaii sauce, and topped with spicy tuna, house spicy sauce and sweet soy sauce. The flavor combinations were unique and we both commented we hadn’t experienced a similar roll before. We ended our meal with ceviche, which included tuna, salmon, shrimp and octopus, mixed with cucumber, onion, cilantro, citrus, passion fruit and yuzu sauce. Plantain chips came on the side.
With so many unique offerings on the menu, I look forward to my next visit to Kawaii Tori Sushi.
