Instead of trying to get healthy for a trip, why not use a trip as a way to jump-start a healthier life back home? That’s one of the goals of the Bikini Bootcamp offered at Amansala Eco Chic Resort. Two hours south of crowded Cancun, Amansala offers a much quieter, more secluded version of the white sands and turquoise waters of Mexico’s Caribbean coast than its popular neighbor to the north.
The camp programs boast a mix of structured activities and intentional goal setting with a relaxed atmosphere. Sure, it’s called bootcamp, but it’s noncompetitive and each participant is encouraged to work at his or her own pace. (Yes, we said his. Even though “bikini” is right there in the name, men can do it, too – Amansala even offers specialized co-ed sessions that cater to singles.) Participation in all of the activities is encouraged, but it’s not mandatory; the instructors’ vibes are more spiritual guide than drill sergeant. Journaling, stretching and walking are part of every day’s itinerary, but other activities can vary from high-powered cardio to guided meditation.
You can fly solo, bring a partner or make it a friends’ getaway like Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Reese Witherspoon did this spring (groups of five or more campers can get a discount). The camps are scheduled to last six days, and the costs (starting at $2,175) include accommodations, classes, excursions, all meals but one (to ensure you get out and taste Tulum), two spa services and a Mayan clay treatment. Best of all, though, instead of post-vacation doldrums, alums say you’ll return home with renewed energy.
