The thrilling city of Barcelona, Spain, is known for its relaxed citizens, refreshing beaches and colorful cuisine, the latter of which is on abundant display at the famous La Boqueria market. Located just a few paces off the tourist-heavy thoroughfare known as La Rambla, this wall-less market is housed under a gigantic roof and organized by culinary category, from seafood to fruits and vegetables to ham and other meats. (But let’s be honest: In Spain, jamón reigns supreme).
The sections within La Boqueria are easily identifiable by scent before you even reach them. Bright color palates of fruits are divvied up into take-away cups with tiny toothpicks if all you want is a taste of the rainbow. Pigs’ hindquarters hang from overhead racks and can be purchased in whole or by weight.
Every imaginable living creature from the Mediterranean Sea is on display toward the back of the market where a strong stomach is recommended. Introduce yourself to some undersea species you may have never seen or heard of. Prepared varieties of the delicacies are available for purchase and include fried calamari, cod croquettes and raw oysters and mussels, among others.
La Boqueria is not just for tourists’ hungry eyes and bellies; locals have frequented the market for years to acquire prime, exclusive ingredients that cannot be found anywhere else in Barcelona. The vendors themselves are often the ones who have procured the product, meaning they are the most knowledgeable about the goods and can advise on preparation methods and optimal cooking times.
Make it a point to visit La Boqueria on your next Barcelona holiday for a true taste of the coastal city.
