On a cold Saturday morning, I ventured into homegrown coffee giant La Colombe’s new flagship coffee shop in the historic Philadelphia neighborhood ofFishtown. The 11,000-square-foot warehouse features a full-menu café and also functions as a distillery, with a 450-liter CARL cooper distillery that creates La Colombe’s coffee-infused rum, Different Drum.
Stepping into the sprawling property, I was amazed at how huge and beautiful the warehouse is. The location features ample seating along exposed brick walls, décor that fits in with the urban neighborhood and a beautiful, colorful coffee mural by local artist Steve “ESPO” Powers.
Though I was tempted to try one of the rare pour-over coffees offered at its beautiful Silverton bar, I chose a cup of regular coffee that warmed me up and left me ready to tackle the day. Because the café doesn’t start serving its sandwiches, salads, tartines, skillets and boards until 11 a.m., I opted for a fluffy chocolate chip muffin made by the on-site bakery and shared some of my dining companion’s breakfast sandwich, featuring delicious pork roll, egg and cheese with potato hash on thick pieces of buttery brioche. Friends who came after lunch began raved about the mouthwatering French Drip sandwich, including coffee roast beef, onions, aged cheddar and horseradish.
With plenty of seating, various kinds of coffee and a delicious menu, the new La Colombe in Fishtown is the perfect place to take a coffee break.
