This winter has (in some cases literally) been one for the record books. Between the biting cold and the crazy snow, no one can be blamed for dreaming of warm and sunny locales to the south. If you’re planning your dream island getaway, may we suggest a few of these off-the-beaten-path islands that are a) beautiful, b) not freezing cold and c) not quite havens for tourists.
Nevis
This 39.5-square-mile island gets most of its revenue from tourism, but that doesn’t mean it’s jam-packed with all-inclusive resorts. Rich in history, with several converted plantations open for stays and others in ruins tucked into the jungle, Nevis is a gem tucked into the azure waters of the Caribbean. Beaches, mountains and jungles offer plenty of outdoorsy opportunities for travelers, and the close proximity of the rest of The Narrows island chain makes it a great stop for those looking to island hop.
Carriacou
Carriacou is a diver’s dream. The island is surrounded by reefs, which are populated by sharks, stingrays and lobsters. The island itself is perfect for those who want to get away to a beautiful beach or take in some beautiful Caribbean landscapes. Carriacou is considered the safest and friendliest island in the region, and with only 8,000 local residents, the 13-square-mile island offers privacy for those who enjoy peace and quiet.
Saba
Saba looks like something straight out of a movie, with luscious greenery sweeping down to the deep blue sea. The bulk of the five-square-mile island is made up of a potentially active volcano called Mount Scenery, which is fitting for this breathtaking island. A great fit for the outdoorsy traveler, the island offers a range of rental cabins and inns along with both ocean- and land-based adventure opportunities.
Dominica
At just under 290 square miles, Dominica is much larger than Saba, but just as gorgeous. The island is home to tropical rainforests, volcanic rock formations, sandy beaches and numerous rivers. Morne Trois Pitons National Park is a World Heritage Site, and 365 of the island’s rivers are protected.
Isla Mujeres
At 4.3 miles long and just 2,130 feet wide, Isla Mujeres is small enough for visitors to take full advantage of the many tourist offerings. You can swim with dolphins and sea turtles, explore the unique underwater museum or reefs and enjoy amazing, fresh seafood. Mayan ruins and art are also open to the public, perfect for those who want to learn more about the island’s history.
