South America isn’t exactly known for its progressive policies when it comes to gays and lesbians, so it might be shocking to learn Montevideo has quickly become one of the best spots for LGBT travelers worldwide.
The country made significant strides in furthering gay rights and recently legalized same-sex marriage, the third country in the Americas to do so. While there isn’t exactly a vibrant gay scene, that’s because LGBT members are generally seen as a normal part of the culture in the country so there is no real need for special accommodations or areas to cater to them
There are a couple of hotspots, though, if you find yourself in need. Particularly, Chihuahua houses the only exclusively gay hotel in the city, though it’s sitting right on top of a nudist beach.
It’s nothing to see gay men and women walking along the promenade in Montevideo holding hands or engaging in acts of PDA. LGBT tend to frequent the same bars and clubs as their straight counterparts, so it can be difficult finding a place where you’ll be surrounded only by other gay men and women.
The country fully embraces diversity and homosexuality has never been illegal, which helps explain the warm embrace LGBT men and woman receive in the city.
