Iceland holds the award for being the most gay-friendly place on Earth. Okay, maybe there’s no actual award for that, but there probably should be and the country would be the first to receive it. The city of Reykjavik is no exception and it’s a wonderful place for LGBT men and women to explore.
The city hosts numerous Pride events during the month of August, the prime month to visit if you want to celebrate with other LGBT folks. It’s still pretty great the rest of the year, too.
One of the best bars in town is Kiki, the only gay club in the city, so it obviously gets pretty packed most nights of the week. The rooms are filled wall to wall with both locals and foreigners looking to have a good time.
Since being a member of the LGBT community is something people don’t even think twice about in Iceland, there aren’t a ton of gay-themed bars and restaurants; everyone just tends to mingle together no matter where you go. So while you’re in town feel free to head out to any establishment you run across and prepare to feel welcome.
A thermal bath is a must when in town, so be sure to check out Sundhöllin, one of the greatest geothermal swimming pools in all of Iceland. For great food, you can’t go wrong by stopping in either Svarta Kaffid or Grillmarkadurinn.
