The west coast of the United States is known for its liberal politics, and Seattle is no exception. As such, it’s not surprising the city has a thriving gay and lesbian scene. In fact, Seattle recently surpassed San Francisco as having the highest concentration of gay-couple households among America’s large cities. And it’s roughly even by sex: Most cities have a disproportionate number of gay citizens and very few lesbian residents; Seattle is the sole exception.
Seattle’s primary “gayborhood” is Capitol Hill, where rainbow flags are common sights in bars, restaurants and shops. This is also ground zero for many of the activities surrounding Seattle’s annual Pride Fest, including the sprawling street fair and daylong party that is PrideFest Capitol Hill & Family Day.
While LGBT travelers won’t find any anti-gay establishments, there are a slew of hotels (and attractions) officially approved by the Gay and Lesbian Convention and Visitors Bureau, including the chic boutique Hotel Max (and the Inn at the Market, located next to the city’s historic Pike Place Market.
Gay bars of note include Madison Pub, Pony, Diesel, R Place, Purr, the Cuff, Neighbors and the Wildrose.
