Swedish carmaker Volvo has come up with an interesting way of improving road safety for the increasing number of cyclists who have to share busy urban roads with heavy traffic. As the number of cycling fans grows, so does the number of accidents they are involved in, and Volvo’s Life Paint aims to combat that.
The product is a reflective safety spray that can be applied to any fabric or other material. Now that does not mean that your smart suit jacket will be crisscrossed with ugly lines of reflective spray while you are at work; Life Paint is invisible in the daytime, but begins to glow in the light of car headlights at night. By spraying Life Paint onto your bike, helmet or jacket, you can avoid the need to carry separate reflective gear, which is not usually the most fashion-forward.
Older cities such as London present particular problems for cyclists due to the fact that the narrow streets make it hard to share the road with motorized traffic. Volvo has chosen to trial Life Paint in the British capital, where visitors to six bicycle shops can try it for free. There are plans to offer the product in the rest of the United Kingdom and internationally should it prove to be a success, and a convenient solution for improving cycle safety is sure to be well received by the cycling public.
