Located in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood, Lomzynianka serves up traditional Polish dishes.
The décor is kitschy — framed photos and illustrations of Poland, unique tablecloths, small lamps on each table and taxidermied animal heads on the walls. It feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. The menu is written in Polish on the left side and English on the right. We heard several diners speaking in Polish during our visit.
After we ordered, our waitress brought out a plate of coleslaw, purple cabbage salad, carrot salad, sauerkraut and pickles. Each was very tasty and fresh. We split an order of potato pancakes. They were crispy and fluffy and paired well with a side of the sour cream.
Being Polish, I’ve tried many traditional dishes in my life. Rather than trying something on the adventurous side, I opted for a perennial favorite: pierogies. I ordered the boiled potato and cheese pierogies served with onions and sour cream. The dough was the perfect texture of not too dense and not too thin.
If you want a little bit of everything, try the Polish platter, which comes with three pierogies (one each of meat, potato and cheese and sauerkraut and mushroom), kielbasa, stuffed cabbage, bigos (meat and cabbage stew) and potatoes.
Entrees are filling and start at $7.75. Feel free to bring your own beer or wine. Don’t plan on using your credit card: Lomzynianka is cash only.
For a traditional Polish meal in Brooklyn, you can’t beat Lomzynianka.
