London’s First Mexican Supermarket

For years, Mexican food was something of an afterthought in London, but things are slowly changing.

In recent times, there have been a number of restaurant openings, and chains such as Wahaca brought Mexican food to the masses. Hoping to capitalize on Londoners’ newfound love for all things Mexican is La Tiendita, the first Mexican supermarket in the British capital.

La Tiendita is currently found on New Kings Road, near Putney Bridge. For the moment it is housed inside Bishops Stores, a newsagent that offers a wide range of products, but its founders plan to expand rapidly.

The husband and wife team behind La Tiendita want to bring typical Mexican products to Britain, from dried chilis to tinned beans and typical delicacies such as banderilla tamarindo candies. If you can’t get to the premises, there is an online shop where U.K. customers can order for delivery.

While the Mexican connection with London will likely never be as strong as it is with the United States, there is a considerable Mexican community in the British capital. Add to that the growing interest in Mexico and its food, and La Tiendita could be onto something.
