With nearly 40 years between the free Cambodian people and the genocide-provoking rule of the Khmer Rouge, there is still work to be done. Corruption prevails, as does human trafficking and poverty. Though the Cambodian people have made great strides and brought in a booming market for tourism, there is a need for long-term aid in the capital city of Phnom Penh and the provinces around the country.
Three of the most well established organizations are:
Friends International: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap
They are dedicated to taking the focus away from using children as tourism. A situation started occurring where Cambodian families were encouraged to give their children to orphanages because tourists were paying to “help” them. Friends International supports children in a safe and educational way, with volunteer opportunities such as:
- Social workers
- Graphic designers
- Web developers
- Film makers
- Chefs
Daughters of Cambodia: Phnom Penh
The sex trafficking issues in Cambodia are deep-rooted in cultural and socioeconomic norms. To break the cycle of families giving their daughters to the sex industry and then having the daughters continue that life by choice, Daughters of Cambodia steps in to show another way. By empowering young women with skills that provide financial security, they can begin to put their pasts behind them. Daughters of Cambodia is looking for volunteers in areas such as:
- Waitresses and baristas
- Chefs and pastry artists
- Graphic designers
- Accountant
- Human Resources Administrator
Pepy—Chanleas Dai: Siem Reap
Leading the movement in long-term volunteer, Pepy (Promoting Education, emPowering Youth) works in western regions of Cambodia to give students career success. By taking the time to work long projects, volunteers can see their efforts from start to finish. Rolling application basis only.
