When traveling to any new country, it is important to research the customs and cultural morés of the area. Portugal has a unique and rich ethnic lifestyle, perhaps different than any other European country.
The Language
While the Spanish language is more widely known than Portuguese, and the two have many similarities, travelers should never speak to Portuguese folks in Spanish. Many find it disrespectful because of the tumultuous history between the two countries. If a traveler does not know Portuguese, French is a more appropriate substitute and is spoken by many locals.
Entradas
In this country, appetizers, or entradas, are brought to a customer’s table without prompting. These dishes are not free, however. If you eat even one item from the tray, you will be charged the full price of the food. This is contrary to the customs of countries like the United States where food brought to a table without the customer asking is typically free.
Tipping
Unlike many other European countries, tipping your waiter or waitress is somewhat customary. While they may not expect anything, 5 percent to 10 percent is commonly a good tip. Each of the wait staff in these restaurants are typically paid low wages, and many rely on tipping to support themselves. Tipping taxi drivers, however, is appreciated but not necessary.
