“Wow,” was the first word I uttered upon opening my balcony doors and immediately being greeted with views of the Great Pyramids of Giza. Waking up and looking out of the window at the last-standing Ancient Wonder was an experience I never tired of during my recent trip to Egypt.

Nestled alongside the Giza Plateau in the shadows of the pyramids, Mena House is an oasis away from the chaos of Cairo, boasting luxury accommodations and unmatched views of the pyramids. Since its opening as a royal hunting lodge in 1869, this palatial hotel has hosted world-known figures including Winston Churchill, author Agatha Christie, Frank Sinatra and former President Jimmy Carter.

Throughout its public areas and in guestrooms are beautiful antiques, handcrafted furniture and original works of art designed to reflect the royal history of the property. My guestroom was clean and spacious, with wooden flooring, a marble bathroom and a comfortable bed. When not exploring my surroundings, I relaxed by one of the hotel’s serene pools and dined at 139, the property’s all-day dining room boasting a diverse menu and breathtaking views of the pyramids. In addition to excellent service, security was also top notch, with metal detectors at every entrance.

My only complaint was the WiFi service. While the public areas offered excellent connections, my paid-for in-room WiFi was extremely slow and unreliable. However, the hotel’s beautiful views and incredibly close access to the Giza Plateau, including the Great Pyramids, the Great Sphinx and several other large pyramids and temples, more than made up for this issue.
