Minus5 offers a cool, new experience in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. In the lobby of the New York Hilton Midtown on 6th Avenue and 53rd Street, eventhe most sultry day turns into an arctic paradise. General Manager Richard Marsiglia explains that the ice is re-sculpted every six to eight months and the ice bar sees a mixed crowd of children, tourists and adults. The Ice Bar is a midtown destination with an artic, changing landscape.
Minus5 features a bar made completely from sculpted ice; the walls, glasses and chairs are also ice. Marsiglia adds that the bar uses about 4,000 ice glasses per week. The chilled room fits about 50 to 60 guests and serves a variety of cold-friendly libations. Try the Frozen A$$ets, which combines Three Olives Marilyn Monroe Vodka and white cranberry juice in a frosty, ice glass. For an alcohol-free option, order the Snowman — pineapple juice, coconut milk and a splash of grenadine.
In order to acclimate to the chill, guests can rent parkas and gloves for $20 or select the VIP Experience and receive a Russian winter hat as well. Minus5 is not just a bar, but also an ice attraction and admits those under 21 before 8 p.m. There are a variety of mocktails and frozen treats for younger visitors. Guests can purchase souvenir photos for $20 each.
Minus5 reflects a growing trend of creating encompassing dining experiences that go beyond food and drinks. The ice bar may just be the coolest spot on the block.
