German soccer is famous around the world for its high-quality play and amazing fan experience. It’s also home to some fascinating clubs.
St Pauli
Hamburg-based St Pauli enjoyed limited success on the field, but are well-known for a club culture that includes staunch support of left-wing politics. Flying the skull and crossbones, the fans are instantly recognizable.
FC Union Berlin
This Berlin-based club emerged as a cult favorite around Europe thanks to its unique fanbase. When the club was struck by financial difficulties in 2004, fans managed to raise enough money to get a license to play by donating blood to Berlin hospitals and donating the money to the club.
Borussia Dortmund
It may be one of the biggest clubs in the country, but Dortmund still manages to be interesting. The ground, called Signal Iduna Park, is home to the largest freestanding terrace in Europe. It is known as the “Yellow Wall” for the club colors and frenetic atmosphere.
FC Koln
Known for some of the craziest fans in Germany, Cologne’s biggest team once took 10,000 fans to an away game in London. At home, they are known for chanting throughout the match and making home ground, the Müngersdorfer Stadion, a tough place for opposing teams to play.
RB Leipzig
This club is interesting for entirely different reasons to the others on this list. Having been created in just 2009, the club is the youngest in the top league. It’s also owned by Red Bull, the soft drink giant, which makes it a controversial presence.
