Fans of art will be delighted with the offerings of Rome’s famous Musei Capitolini, where you can find famous works like La Lupe, Bernini’s Medusa and The Dying Gaul.
The Musei Capitolini is actually a network of museums located primarily around the central part of Rome, near the Colosseum. You’ll find them in Piazza del Campidoglio. Many of them are free to walk around, though you’ll have to pay to see some of the most popular artworks.
The buildings themselves were the real draw for me, and I think I enjoyed walking outside more than inside. There are three main museums situated around and the area known as the Palazzo dei Conservatori, which houses the massive statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius mounted on a horse. The sculptures here are nothing short of extraordinary and awe-inspiring.
Inside the museums you’ll find halls lined with busts of famous Roman emperors and soldiers, as well as a few other famous historical figures like Hercules. Ancient sculptures also include Greek and Egyptian heroes and lore on top of Roman, and you’ll occasionally find depictions of Christianity throughout the halls.
I don’t really consider myself a connoisseur of fine art, but I was fascinated as I walked through the columns and arches that make up the museums. Children might not have the most engaging time here, as they’re certainly not allowed to touch any of the art (though some tried!), but adults will be able to make a wonderful day of it.
It’s within walking distance of some of the best restaurants and sites in the city, so feel free to take your time exploring and pop in and out as you feel.
